Freeze-up on the Hay River

Freeze-up on the Hay River at Hay River, NWT (Canada), October 27, 2008

Looking downstream to the ‘Forks” at Hay River during freeze-up.  Frazil pans have filled the East Channel (on the right) and incoming pans are now heading down the West Channel (on the left).  Note the shear line between the static ice cover (on the right) and the moving ice (on the left).  Note also, the centrifugal force is pushing pans to the right as they make the turn into the West Channel and some are sliding under the others.
