Border Ice Development on the Susitna River, Alaska

Border Ice Development during freeze-up on the Susitna River, Alaska, November 6, 2013

Another awesome photo by PhD student Julia Blackburn, taken during freeze-up on the Susitna River, Alaska. The constriction of the river due to the rocky outcrop on the right, and the development of border ice on the left, make this location a good candidate for surface ice bridging to occur during the freeze-up process.

Ice Bridging on the Susitna River, Alaska

DSCN2645 Julia c

Ice bridging during freeze-up on the Susitna River, Alaska, November 6, 2013

PhD student Julia Blackburn took this great photo on a recent trip to Alaska – she was there  to observe freeze-up on the Susitna River as part of her research project. Border ice development at this naturally occurring constriction has resulted in surface ice bridging. However, at the time Julia took the photo, the current was so strong that any incoming ice was being swept under the bridge and spat out the other side, impeding further development of the ice cover at this location.

Freeze-up on the Susitna River, Alaska, November 8, 2013

Our friend and colleague in Alaska, Dr. Jon Zufelt, was kind enough to share this beautiful photo of freeze-up on the Susitna River.  Notice the festive Christmas tree forming on the tip if the island.  Thanks Jon for sharing this!  Special thanks also to Dr. Steve Daly for suggesting this one to us.
